Trend Micro exposes the operations behind fake digital job platforms and highlights the growing financial and psychological harm suffered by victims.
Trend Micro today publishes a report that explains the mechanisms and scale of a rapidly expanding fraud model known as “task scams.” These are sophisticated online schemes that mimic legitimate digital job platforms, luring job seekers with promises of paid tasks but ultimately defrauding them of money.

“Task scams are today among the most financially and psychologically damaging cybercrimes affecting individuals,” says Martin Fribrock, Country Manager of Trend Micro Sweden. He warns that the infrastructure enabling these crimes—from domain registrations to SMS services—requires immediate attention. Companies can help reduce the risk by making their hiring processes transparent and by educating applicants on how to verify legitimate contacts.
Trend Micro’s report reveals an extensive global criminal infrastructure that impersonates legitimate companies, uses trusted communication channels, and exploits private job seekers by applying gamification techniques.
These modern scams are intentionally designed to avoid detection. In a recent Trend Micro study of over 6,500 consumers, 39 percent reported that they only realized they had been scammed after losing a significant amount of money. The sums involved are considerable. Trend Micro’s research highlights cases where perpetrators transfer millions via crypto wallets, with victims losing amounts ranging from a few thousand to several hundred thousand kronor.
Key findings from the report include:
- Scammers successfully impersonate real businesses such as staffing agencies and digital marketing firms.
- They deploy gamified scam platforms that use reward sequences and performance incentives to keep victims engaged.
- Trend Micro documents widespread use of SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, and fake websites to create a veneer of legitimacy.
- Cryptocurrency payments obscure financial trails and facilitate cross-border money laundering.
