Svenska kraftnät Chooses HiQ for Major Project to Balance Nordic Power Grid

Sweden faces major challenges in its power system. To ensure a stable electricity supply, HiQ has been selected as one of two suppliers under Svenska kraftnät‘s new IT framework agreement, tasked with developing a new method for efficient balancing of the Nordic power system.

As the power system changes rapidly, ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply becomes increasingly challenging. Svenska kraftnät is leading the development of the Nordic Balancing Model (NBM) — a future-proof balancing model for the entire Nordic region. This model is being developed in collaboration with regional transmission system operators and aligned with the EU’s internal electricity market to support the energy transition.

Svenska kraftnät has signed a framework agreement for this development with two suppliers, HiQ and Knowit. The agreement has an estimated total value of up to SEK 1.2 billion and covers an initial three-year period, with the option to extend for up to eight years. Security considerations are central, and suppliers may be subject to protective security agreements under the Swedish Protective Security Act.

HiQ brings extensive experience delivering digital solutions for critical infrastructure. This includes its ongoing collaboration with Svenska kraftnät as well as projects supporting the modernization of Sweden’s payment infrastructure.

“Being trusted to contribute to such a vital public service as the power system is a great honor. With our deep expertise and experience in complex technology solutions, we look forward to helping ensure a robust and future-proof approach to Sweden’s electricity supply,” says David Sandberg, Head of Public Sector at HiQ.

The Nordic Balancing Model aims to create a coordinated, secure and flexible framework for real-time balancing across the region. By integrating data, forecasts and operational processes across national borders, NBM seeks to improve system reliability, enable more efficient use of generation and resources, and support increased integration of renewable energy. For operators and suppliers, the agreement represents a long-term commitment to modernization, with strong emphasis on cybersecurity, resilience and compliance.

HiQ’s role will involve close cooperation with Svenska kraftnät and other stakeholders to design, implement and test modular IT solutions that support the NBM. Deliverables are expected to include software components for market and operational coordination, data aggregation and quality assurance, as well as tools for situational awareness and decision support. The work will follow stringent security requirements and be adapted to evolving regulatory standards and technical needs.

For Sweden and the Nordic region, the development of a unified balancing model is a strategic step toward a more flexible, sustainable electricity system. It aims to facilitate cross-border cooperation, improve operational efficiency and reduce risks associated with increased variability from renewable energy sources. The collaboration between Svenska kraftnät, HiQ and other partners is intended to deliver a scalable, maintainable and secure platform that can evolve with the region’s transition to a low-carbon energy system.
