Wi‑Fi Alliance Rolls Out Smart Home Certification Program

Wi‑Fi Alliance has introduced a certification program called Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED Home Design, which establishes industry guidelines to help home builders deliver professionally planned network installations.

The best practices defined by this program ensure consistent Wi‑Fi coverage throughout the entire residence, including outdoor areas such as garages and patios. The program also promotes seamless integration with a wide range of smart‑home devices, including voice‑activated wireless speakers, security cameras, smart locks, connected light bulbs, thermostats, and appliances.

Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED Home Design was developed with the future of connected homes in mind. Its specifications reflect input from a broad cross‑section of the industry—Wi‑Fi infrastructure vendors, mobile device makers, consumer electronics manufacturers, smart‑home companies, and home builders—who collaborated through the Wi‑Fi Alliance.

Lennar, one of the largest homebuilders in the United States, is the first to offer newly built homes that incorporate Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED Home Design along with wireless entertainment systems from leading consumer brands.

David J. Kaiserman, president of Lennar Ventures, commented that Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED Home Design establishes a high standard for residential Wi‑Fi networks and gives homebuyers confidence that their new homes will support a truly connected lifestyle—whether that means enhanced security and comfort from smart devices, smooth streaming entertainment, or the next innovations yet to come.

Josh Redmore, lead wireless architect at CableLabs, expects the program to deliver enterprise‑class, standardized Wi‑Fi performance throughout homes that adopt the Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED Home Design approach.

Leviton Manufacturing, known for advanced lighting controls, has pledged its support for the Wi‑Fi Alliance certification program. Miao Wang, director of standards and patents at Haier, also emphasized the importance of a unified program to ensure homeowners enjoy a superior smart‑home experience and to establish a consistent industry standard that benefits manufacturers, builders, and consumers alike.
