Innovative Partnership Launches Card Payments at EV Charging Stations

A new partnership between Virta, Mastercard and Worldpay simplifies electric vehicle charging by introducing card payments at charging stations across Sweden and Europe. The recently launched solution, Virta Payment Kiosk, enables secure and reliable card transactions at EV charging points, improving the overall user experience.

Until now, electric vehicle drivers have primarily used dedicated apps to manage charging. As EV adoption rises, demand for more convenient payment options—especially card payments—has grown. Card acceptance at chargers addresses this need by removing the friction of app downloads and account setup.

“The lack of unified, easy-to-use payment options at charging stations has long frustrated EV drivers. We are therefore pleased to partner with Virta and Worldpay to establish new payment standards in the charging landscape and support more sustainable mobility,” says Erik Gutwasser, Division Head for Mastercard Nordics and Baltics.

Commercial benefits for charging station operators

Virta Payment Kiosk is also expected to boost profitability for charging station operators by lowering costs and accelerating rollout. The solution is designed to support multiple chargers at a single site, increasing flexibility and enabling operators to scale more efficiently.

“By expanding payment options to include card payments, we provide full choice and flexibility for consumers. We expect the Payment Kiosk to increase station utilization, particularly in high-traffic locations, by offering fast and convenient charging without requiring users to download an app,” says Elias Pöyry, Co‑founder and Chief Business Development Officer at Virta.

Goal of European coverage

Under the partnership, Virta Payment Kiosk will be rolled out in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. The ambition is to make card payments available at all Powered by Virta charging stations across Europe by the end of 2025.

By combining payments expertise with charging infrastructure, the collaboration aims to remove a key barrier to EV adoption: convenient on-site payments. For drivers, the move means quicker access to charging and fewer hurdles; for operators, it promises streamlined operations and higher usage rates. The rollout across multiple Nordic markets marks an important step toward broader European availability and a more user-friendly charging network.
