EE and Qualcomm Break 5G Spectrum Aggregation Record in the UK

EE has partnered with Qualcomm to set a new European record in 5G spectrum aggregation.

The operator successfully combined seven different spectrum carriers to deliver a single 5G signal, using its established 3.4 GHz channels alongside newly allocated 3.6 GHz 5G spectrum.

David Salam, Director of Mobile at BT (EE’s parent company), said:

“Our commitment to technology investment and innovation, coupled with our leading 5G footprint, continues to see the EE network offer and sustain the best overall 5G experience in the UK.

By pooling our research expertise with Qualcomm Technologies, we have been able to further enhance the EE network and will start to deliver some of Europe’s fastest 5G speeds in our major cities.”

For customers, this advancement means substantially faster mobile data rates. In laboratory tests, EE recorded 5G download speeds exceeding 2.2 Gbps and expects commercially available devices to see real-world speeds above 1.7 Gbps.

The lab demonstration used a device powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System, showing how the chipset and network can work together to manage multiple bands simultaneously.

Vikrant Jain, Director of Business Development at Qualcomm Technologies, added:

“We’re proud to have worked with EE to achieve such a notable milestone in the evolution of 5G technology.

Aggregating seven (5LTE + 2NR) different spectrum bands for 5G is a significant achievement and will provide enhanced customer experience.

Qualcomm Technologies would like to congratulate EE as it remains at the forefront of 5G technology innovation.”

EE says the capability will be rolled out in major cities during the year and will be supported by the next generation of 5G smartphones, enabling faster downloads, smoother streaming and more responsive mobile applications.
