Huawei and Telefónica have teamed up to introduce what they describe as the world’s first antenna deployment solution designed specifically for 5G.
Announced at the 2017 Global Antenna Technology & Industry Forum in Munich, the new antenna deployment solution follows closely on the heels of Huawei’s latest flagship smartphone release. The company says the solution addresses a key obstacle operators face as they transition from 4G to 4.5G and 5G networks.
As operators roll out higher-band 4T4R configurations across Sub‑3 GHz bands and prepare for Massive MIMO deployment, available antenna mounting space becomes increasingly constrained. Huawei’s solution aims to resolve the problem of limited antenna real estate while enabling operators to support evolving network needs without sacrificing performance.
“Based on many years of technical experience in wireless networks and a deep understanding of mobile broadband, Huawei, together with Telefónica Deutschland, is releasing the world’s first 5G-oriented antenna deployment solution,” said Joyee Zhang, President of Huawei’s Wireless Network Antenna Business Unit. “This innovative approach helps operators overcome deployment barriers and supports future business success.”
With spectrum allocations such as 700 MHz and 1,400 MHz becoming more common, 4T4R architectures have become mainstream. According to Huawei, traditional overlay methods no longer meet deployment requirements because operators must also reserve antenna space for Massive MIMO to enable a smooth evolution to 5G.
The jointly developed solution integrates a 14‑port multi‑band antenna and a TDD 3.5 GHz Massive MIMO antenna to satisfy Telefónica’s needs for a straightforward migration path toward 5G. Huawei says the design supports 4T4R across all applicable bands, including the L band, while keeping the overall antenna width compact at just 469 mm.
“In forward‑looking mobile broadband network evolution, limited antenna installation space can seriously impede deployment progress,” explained Jaime Lluch, Radio Access Network Director at Telefónica Deutschland. “Telefónica and Huawei’s 5G‑oriented antenna deployment solution addresses the space constraints while ensuring strong network performance and capacity.”
The collaboration signals an emphasis on practical, space‑efficient hardware designs as operators prepare for denser, higher‑capacity 5G networks. By combining multi‑band and Massive MIMO capabilities in a compact form factor, the partners aim to simplify site upgrades and minimize the need for extensive structural changes at cell sites.
While the announcement highlights a technical response to a well‑known deployment challenge, the real‑world impact will depend on operator rollouts, regulatory approvals, and integration with broader network modernization plans. If successful, the solution could help reduce deployment time and costs associated with expanding antenna systems to accommodate both enhanced 4G configurations and emerging 5G services.
