AT&T Pioneers 5G-Powered Autonomous Robots for Retail Stores

AT&T is collaborating with Badger Technologies to deploy autonomous robots in retail stores, equipping them with 5G connectivity to improve store operations and customer service.

Badger Technologies, a product division of Jabil, has developed mobile robots that scan store aisles to detect out-of-stock items, pricing errors, misplaced products, and potential safety hazards. These robots capture large volumes of in-store images and data that help retailers maintain accurate inventory, improve shelf availability, and create a better shopping experience for customers. Because of the data intensity, these systems can place heavy demands on a store’s existing Wi‑Fi network.

To address connectivity and performance needs, the robots are being trialed within a multi-access edge computing environment. AT&T Foundry is supporting these trials by delivering low-latency, seamless network connectivity so the robots can reliably send and receive data in real time.

Using AT&T’s edge computing solutions also enables more localized data processing, giving Badger Technologies the option to route data over a private, dedicated connection rather than standard in-store Wi‑Fi. That arrangement enhances data privacy and control, and allows Badger to monitor and manage data flows more effectively while reducing reliance on shared wireless infrastructure.

Earlier in the year, AT&T outlined a business-focused 5G strategy built on three pillars: mobile 5G, fixed wireless, and edge computing. The operator emphasizes that millions of U.S. businesses are actively seeking technologies that provide a competitive advantage. Emerging technologies such as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) can deliver stronger business outcomes when paired with reliable, high-performance connectivity.
