To accelerate cloud-based machine-to-machine (M2M) development, Deutsche Telekom is offering developer kits designed to help engineers and creators get started quickly.
At Mobile World Congress in February, TelecomsTech spoke with Deutsche Telekom’s Ruslan Ismailov about the company’s M2M strategy, and now tangible progress is appearing in the form of these starter kits.
The basic kit includes either an Arduino or a Cinterion board equipped with a GSM module and a SIM card for network connectivity. It also provides access to Deutsche Telekom’s M2M developer platform, developed in collaboration with cloud specialist Cumulocity, enabling devices to connect, send data, and be managed from the cloud.
For developers who already own compatible hardware, Deutsche Telekom offers a “DevFlex Kit.” This option supplies a SIM card with a six‑month M2M data plan and private access credentials to the cloud-based M2M Developer Platform, so teams can integrate and test their devices without additional infrastructure setup.
As the Internet of Things (IoT) gains momentum globally, Deutsche Telekom aims to support and accelerate that growth by fostering an ecosystem of developers building M2M applications. By providing both hardware and cloud access, the company hopes to be among the leaders shaping practical uses of connected devices.
To further stimulate the community, Deutsche Telekom will relaunch its M2M Developer Community in conjunction with the kit release, offering resources, documentation, and a forum for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Jürgen Hase, Head of Deutsche Telekom’s M2M Competence Center, commented: “For Deutsche Telekom, the creativity emerging from a rapidly growing M2M developer community is an important building block in the development of the Internet of Things.”
He added: “The sheer diversity of uses for M2M creates challenges, from technical design to business models. Requirements for a smart home solution are entirely different from those for a smart factory.”
The industry is at an exciting turning point: the next phase of innovation focuses on connecting and automating devices for greater efficiency across sectors. Organizations and developers aiming to remain competitive should evaluate M2M opportunities—both for business processes and consumer applications—to determine how connected solutions can deliver value.
