Meet the new Zoom! Learn why we are changing our name and what it means for our customers.
What’s in a name? While you may know us simply as “Zoom,” our legal name until now has been “Zoom Video Communications Inc.” That name accurately reflected the solutions we offered when our primary focus was video communication software that helped people around the world connect.
Today, however, Zoom is about much more than video meetings. We have evolved into an AI-first company delivering modern hybrid work solutions that enable seamless collaboration.
That is why we are officially removing “Video” from our legal name. Going forward, we will be known as Zoom Communications Inc.
Looking back at Zoom’s evolution
When I founded Zoom in 2011, my objective was clear: build the best video conferencing solution on the market. I wanted something easy to use, with excellent video quality and strong mobile support, allowing people to connect with a single click. We started with 40 engineers and, within two years, launched Zoom Meetings.
From there we expanded with products like Zoom Team Chat, Zoom Webinars and Zoom Rooms. By 2015 we welcomed our 100th employee—our “Zoomies.” Two years later we reached unicorn status with a valuation of $1 billion. 2017 was also a milestone year as we hosted our first Zoomtopia, our annual user conference.
Over the following years we continued building a unified communications and collaboration platform, adding Zoom Phone in 2019. That same year we reached another major milestone by becoming a public company with our IPO on NASDAQ in April 2019. In 2022 we reached 4 million Zoom Phone seats and launched our cloud-based Zoom Contact Center, along with our conversational intelligence software, Zoom Revenue Accelerator.
We achieved tremendous growth in our customer base, helping thousands of small businesses, entrepreneurs, enterprise organizations and developers experience frictionless communication that fosters stronger human connection.
These innovations and many others helped transform Zoom Video Communications into an award-winning unified communications platform.
And we were just getting started.
Meet Zoom 2.0
From day one our mission has been to deliver happiness to our customers. That mission remains true today. To deliver on it long term, we must stay ahead of trends, innovate quickly, and build solutions that reflect our customers’ most pressing needs—needs that, increasingly, extend well beyond video in the future of work.
This shift is most evident in the AI surge that has reshaped the workplace over the past year. What may once have been a “nice to have” is now a “must” as customers realize the tangible benefits of integrating AI into their workday. We heard that need and developed responsive solutions to enhance daily work. Our AI assistant, Zoom AI Companion, sits at the center of our evolution into an AI-first company and plays a key role in helping customers unlock higher productivity.
What being an AI-first company means for Zoom customers
So what does AI-first mean? For us it means a federated approach to building AI-centered tools and products that help you work happier, smarter and faster. Woven into Zoom Workplace, AI Companion frees you to focus on higher-value work and reduces time spent on routine tasks. By summarizing meeting action items, drafting email replies and preparing you for meetings, AI Companion acts as a digital assistant that lightens your overall workload.
Over time, we believe these capabilities will evolve into a fully customizable digital twin, infused with your institutional knowledge, that could reclaim an entire day of work—bringing us closer to the possibility of a four-day workweek.
That vision of a shorter workweek may sound ambitious, but the length of the workweek has changed before. At one time the standard week was 48 hours rather than the 40 we know today. In 1926 Henry Ford helped catalyze a change to a five-day working week by showing people could accomplish the same work in fewer days. Imagine if we could do it again—achieving the same results in four days and gaining more time for meaningful conversations and stronger connections without adding hours.
The future of Zoom
Looking ahead, I am confident that Zoom Communications Inc. will continue building high-quality, easy-to-use products that help you work with greater happiness. While we are certainly more than a “video meetings company,” our commitment to delivering joy remains the same as it was in 2011.
As we move forward in our transition to an AI-first workplace platform for human connection, our new name more accurately reflects our expanding scope and long-term growth plans. The next generation of Zoom is centered on prioritizing what matters most: helping you deliver creative, insightful work while engaging and connecting with others. Our AI-first solutions, such as Zoom Docs and Zoom AI Companion 2.0, are just the beginning of reimagining what’s possible.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of the Zoom journey—from our original Zoomies and earliest customers to our thousands of employees and millions of users today. I am deeply grateful and excited for everyone to experience what’s possible with Zoom Communications Inc.
