South Korea’s SK Telecom is accelerating the creation of an open smart home ecosystem through new collaborations with Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

SK Telecom has signed memoranda of understanding with both companies to enable interoperability between Samsung’s and LG’s smart home platforms and SK Telecom’s Smart Home App. As a result, users of SK Telecom’s platform will be able to control a wide range of Samsung and LG home appliances — including refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, robot vacuum cleaners, ovens and more — directly from the Smart Home App.

Cho Young-hoon, vice president and head of the smart home task force at SK Telecom, said the company has focused on building an open ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders. “Cooperation with two global consumer electronics leaders, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, is expected to advance the smart home experience, delivering greater value and convenience to users,” he said.

SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest telecommunications provider, reported KRW 17.164 trillion in revenue in 2014. To drive future growth, the company has been developing three strategic platforms centered on lifestyle enhancement, advanced media and Internet of Things (IoT) services.

To expand the smart home and IoT markets, SK Telecom has partnered with about 25 companies across industries such as consumer electronics, furniture and construction. The company planned to introduce at least 20 smart home–compatible products in 2015 and more than 30 products by 2016, demonstrating its intent to rapidly broaden the range of connected devices supported by its platform.

At IFA 2015, SK Telecom showcased a variety of platforms and services spanning smart home, smart shopping and smart appcessories. Demonstrations included how the mobile Smart Home App can remotely control devices such as boilers and air conditioners, illustrating the convenience of unified control across multiple brands and device types.

By opening its platform to major appliance makers, SK Telecom aims to simplify user management of connected devices, reduce fragmentation in the smart home market, and accelerate consumer adoption of IoT-enabled products. The company’s approach emphasizes cross-vendor compatibility, allowing households to manage diverse appliances from a single app while enabling manufacturers to reach a broader user base through standardized integrations.

These partnerships also signal a broader industry trend toward collaboration between telecommunications providers and appliance manufacturers to build seamless, interoperable smart home experiences. For consumers, that translates into fewer barriers to connecting devices and more practical, everyday benefits from a growing ecosystem of smart appliances.
