Lycamobile Launches 4G Data Coverage Across Spain

International mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Lycamobile has expanded its operating agreement with Telefónica to introduce 4G data services across its Spanish network, improving connectivity for its approximately 1.9 million customers in Spain.

Allirajah Subaskaran, chairman of Lyca Group, said the launch of 4G services in Spain underscores the company’s commitment to its Spanish customer base, who will now have access to faster, higher-quality data. He noted that with about 10% of Spain’s population born abroad, enhanced mobile data speeds will make it easier and faster for users to keep in touch with family, friends and communities worldwide.

Market Research Hub reports that the overall value of the Spanish telecom market has declined in recent years. The sector has been challenged by a weak economic climate that contributed to high unemployment and reduced consumer disposable income, factors that have constrained spending on telecom services.

Despite this, Spain remains one of Europe’s largest mobile markets, characterized by strong competition among four main network operators (MNOs) and a growing number of resellers and MVNOs. Competitive pressure, together with regulated roaming charges and mobile termination rates (MTRs), has helped reduce the cost of mobile calls. At the same time, the number of mobile subscriptions has fallen since 2011 as many consumers scaled back multiple-SIM ownership in response to economic pressures.

The market has also undergone significant structural changes. Recent years have seen notable transactions, such as MásMóvil’s acquisition of Yoigo, and regulatory moves like the release of 900 MHz spectrum for mobile broadband. Operators and vendors have increased investment in upgrading networks to support LTE and HSPA+ technologies, and are now directing resources toward 5G infrastructure and services to meet future demand.

Lycamobile has pursued 4G expansion beyond Spain as well. In 2016, the company extended its 4G service footprint in Sweden by broadening its operating agreement with Telenor Sweden. That expansion came amid growing national investment in high‑speed mobile internet and resulted in a network coverage footprint reaching approximately 99.5% of the Swedish population, reflecting Lycamobile’s strategy of partnering with established MNOs to deliver wide 4G access to its customers.

By enabling higher-speed data across its Spanish network through Telefónica’s infrastructure, Lycamobile aims to offer reliable, cost-effective mobile internet to diverse customer segments, including expatriates, migrant workers and frequent international communicators who rely on mobile data for voice-over-IP calls, messaging apps and social connectivity. The rollout supports broader market trends toward faster mobile broadband and sets the stage for future enhancements as Spain’s operators continue investments in network modernization and 5G deployment.
