Several of the world’s leading mobile operators — including AT&T, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Verizon and Vodafone — have moved from trials to commercial rollouts of low power wide area (LPWA) networks, marking a significant step forward for Mobile IoT adoption.
These commercial deployments are part of the GSMA’s Mobile IoT Initiative, which promotes licensed LPWA technologies such as NarrowBand IoT (NB‑IoT) and LTE‑M. In China, China Mobile and China Unicom have launched NB‑IoT services in multiple major cities, while China Telecom has rolled out NB‑IoT coverage nationwide. In Europe, Vodafone has introduced NB‑IoT in Spain and the Netherlands, and Deutsche Telekom has deployed NB‑IoT across several German cities as well as supporting a nationwide rollout in the Netherlands. In the United States, AT&T and Verizon have announced nationwide LTE‑M networks.
These operator deployments reflect growing market confidence in Mobile IoT solutions, which deliver broad coverage, secure licensed connectivity, lower device and operational costs, and flexible support for a wide range of use cases from smart metering and asset tracking to environmental monitoring and industrial IoT.
“It is clear that the market sees the benefit of adopting solutions that offer flexibility, security, lower costs, and cover all use cases, and we look forward to seeing other operators follow in the near future,” said Alex Sinclair, GSMA Chief Technology Officer.
In addition to operator rollouts, the GSMA reports strong momentum in the developer and partner ecosystem. The Mobile IoT Innovators programme — designed to stimulate development of new LPWA-based solutions — has grown to more than 500 members, reflecting the expanding range of products, services and pilot projects leveraging Mobile IoT networks.
Market research underscores China’s leading role in the LPWA and Mobile IoT market. Gartner projects that China will be the dominant market for LPWA by 2025, with approximately 486 million of the estimated 3.1 billion global LPWA connections. China’s leadership is visible both in the pace of network launches and in the size of its ecosystem: of the 546 companies worldwide reported to be developing Mobile IoT solutions, more than 215 are based in China.
The combination of large-scale operator deployments, a growing global developer community and strong regional market leadership — particularly in China — positions Mobile IoT technologies like NB‑IoT and LTE‑M for rapid expansion. As licensed LPWA networks continue to roll out, businesses and cities can expect broader, more reliable connectivity for a wide range of low-power, low-bandwidth IoT applications, helping to accelerate digital transformation across industries.
