Ericsson Wins Red Dot Award for RAN Automation User Interface

Ericsson has been recognised for its RAN automation user interface, winning the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2024 in the “Interaction, UI, and User Experience” category. The accolade highlights Ericsson’s work on the rApps portfolio, a set of RAN automation applications built to O-RAN Alliance standards that simplify and improve radio access network management.

The award-winning design focuses on the UI of Ericsson’s AI-driven rApps, developed by the Cognitive Network Solutions division. These sophisticated applications introduce automation into the management and optimisation of Radio Access Networks via the Non-Real Time RAN Intelligent Controller, helping operators manage complexity more efficiently.

Designed to improve user experience, boost network performance, and streamline operational workflows, the rApps portfolio makes advanced AI capabilities more accessible. It includes explainability features that build trust in AI-driven recommendations and enable network teams to understand and act on insights with confidence.

Ericsson’s rApps combine modern AI detectors with optimisation algorithms that support Communication Service Providers (CSPs) on the path toward more autonomous mobile networks. By automating routine tasks and surfacing clear, actionable guidance, the rApps help operators focus on higher-value work and faster decision-making.

Built in close alignment with the Ericsson Design System, the rApps user experience prioritises real user needs—addressing how people feel, the constraints they face, and the capabilities they require. That user-centric outlook goes beyond visual design: the UI integrates tutorial support, an active community forum, feedback channels, and rating tools to create a seamless, engaging experience that supports adoption and continuous improvement.

Jean-Christophe Laneri, Head of Cognitive Network Solutions at Ericsson, said:

“We are honoured that the thought and consideration the team has put into making excellent user experience for our rApps has been recognised. Without this focus on usability, and especially the features that seek to help build community and take feedback, the smartest AI technology in the world would not be able to reach its full potential.”

As networks become more complex, user-focused design will be essential for unlocking the full benefits of automation and AI across telecom infrastructure.

“As we finalise our rApps for launch, it is heartening to see it confirmed that we’re on track to create powerful AI-based automation, diagnostics, and optimisation software, and help CSPs jump-start their network autonomy journey,” Laneri added.
