China’s largest telecommunications operator, China Mobile, has announced plans to prioritize 4G services for connected vehicles as the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) market grows. Ren Dakai, Chief Director of Traffic Products at China Mobile, said the company aims to serve 500,000 IoV users this year and will introduce 4G IoV terminals in May to support the expanding market.
In Western markets the term “connected cars” is commonly used, but in China the industry refers to this space as the Internet of Vehicles. China Mobile’s move signals its intent to be an early leader in delivering 4G connectivity tailored to vehicles, enabling features such as telematics, infotainment, remote diagnostics, and over‑the‑air updates.
While China Mobile appears set to be first to launch dedicated 4G IoV terminals, competitors are developing their own offerings. China Unicom, for example, is working with international automakers to deploy alternative solutions and has formed partnerships with more than 20 car manufacturers and dealerships to provide 4G services to millions of vehicles.
China Telecom, the country’s third-largest telecom provider, already has a strong presence in the broader Internet of Things (IoT) market and has identified the IoV as its next strategic focus. Together, the major carriers are racing to build platforms and services that differentiate their propositions for automakers, drivers, and fleet operators.
Chinese companies have been actively investing in the IoV since at least 2012. China Mobile first launched a driving terminal system that year for private car owners in Shandong Province. In partnership with General Motors, China Mobile extended 4G services to Cadillac, Chevrolet, and Buick models beginning in the second half of 2014. Soon after, China Unicom announced deals that would extend its 4G offerings to more than three million vehicles.
China’s telecom market for connected cars is ahead of many other countries, demonstrating how competitive and fast‑moving this sector can become. Telecom operators must continuously innovate to win partnerships with automakers and secure their position in this lucrative arena. Automotive manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers should develop clear deployment plans now to take advantage of rapidly evolving connectivity capabilities.
