Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has launched an open source program called the Open Distributed Infrastructure Management initiative, designed to simplify management of large-scale, geographically distributed physical infrastructure deployments.
The Open Distributed Infrastructure Management initiative addresses the complexities telecom operators face when deploying 5G networks across thousands of sites that include IT equipment from multiple vendors and different technology generations. Launched in collaboration with Intel and supported by industry partners including AMI, Apstra, Red Hat, Tech Mahindra and World Wide Technology, the initiative reinforces HPE’s leadership in open 5G technologies and its commitment to accelerating industry alignment through open source innovation.
In partnership with Intel, HPE plans to initiate an open source project under the Linux Foundation to develop the initiative further with ecosystem partners, enabling end-to-end automated management of distributed networks. HPE has also introduced a complementary enterprise offering, the HPE Open Distributed Infrastructure Management Resource Aggregator, which aligns with the initiative’s goals.
The Resource Aggregator includes innovations that will benefit a range of telecommunications solutions, such as the recently announced HPE telco core and edge infrastructure blueprints. Delivered as a service via HPE GreenLake, these infrastructure offerings provide communications providers with an accelerated platform to roll out 5G services across many sites, while simplifying operations and reducing time to market.
Last year, several technology leaders including Intel, Google and Microsoft joined other companies such as Alibaba, Cisco, Dell EMC, Facebook, HPE and Huawei to form an industry group focused on improving data center performance. That effort aims to advance Compute Express Link (CXL), a high-speed CPU-to-device and CPU-to-memory interconnect designed to enhance system performance and resource sharing.
