The UK and South Korea have jointly awarded funding to a winning project that will deliver a new 5G-powered public transport experience.
A total of £2.4 million has been allocated to support this innovative underground transport initiative, with each government contributing £1.2 million.
Digital Minister Margot James announced the selected project as 5G RailNext.
5G RailNext will introduce infotainment services across the Seoul Metro system, using technologies such as augmented reality to provide entertainment, real-time travel information, and additional passenger services.
In the UK, a parallel deployment will take place on the Glasgow Metro, with potential future expansion being explored for the London Underground and the New York subway system.
“5G is the future of connectivity and we want the UK to be a world leader,” said Margot James. “This collaboration with South Korea will explore innovative ways to use the technology to deliver content and services on transport networks in Seoul and Glasgow.”
5G RailNext is a consortium of public and private organisations led by Cisco. The partnership includes British SMEs Ampletime and Soluis, the University of Strathclyde, and Glasgow City Council.
Tony Gribben, Country Manager at Cisco Scotland, commented:
“More so than any other wave of connectivity, 5G presents an opportunity to ensure every industry can benefit from connectivity and the added value it provides to society.
With Glasgow Metro one of the oldest in the world, what more challenging and relatable environment to trial than a moving metro train, equipped with the latest in augmented reality technology.”
The competition was launched in 2019 as part of efforts to attract South Korean investment into the UK and to open opportunities for British companies in South Korea.
As the UK forges new global partnerships following its departure from the EU, it aims to deepen ties with countries like South Korea, which was among the first to agree a provisional trade understanding to limit disruption.
5G RailNext will receive part of its funding from the UK government’s £200 million 5G Testbeds & Trials Programme, which supports British companies developing new experiences for domestic and international markets.
