Nokia Tops 4,000 Core 5G Patent Families

Nokia is one of the global leaders in essential 5G patents, and the company has now passed the milestone of 4,000 declared patent families essential to 5G.

The Finnish vendor has invested more than €130 billion (£111 billion) in research and development since 2000 to build and strengthen its patent portfolio.

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, said:

“We’re proud to have reached the milestone of 4,000 high-quality patent families declared as essential to 5G, but the work does not stop there.

Our focus remains on innovating for the future: driving the development of the next generation of cellular standards and enabling entire industries to build on our inventions.”

A study released in March reported that Nokia held more than 3,500 essential 5G patent families at that time—indicating the company added up to 500 declared families in the following months.

Nokia contributes its inventions to open standards and licenses them under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms, allowing other companies to access the technology while ensuring returns for its innovations.

Earlier this year, Samsung reached an agreement with Nokia to license certain video standards innovations. Under that agreement Samsung will make royalty payments to Nokia in exchange for access to those technologies.
