Blockchain platform VeChain has been chosen as one of the initial partners in NTT Docomo’s 5G Open Partner Program.
NTT Docomo is Japan’s largest telecommunications provider, serving more than 76 million subscribers. The company’s 5G Open Partner Program aims to accelerate industrial adoption of 5G technology and encourage the development of commercial use cases for next-generation mobile networks.
Blockchain is expected to transform many sectors, and VeChain began by addressing an area particularly in need of innovation: supply chain management.
VeChain’s solutions enable secure tracking and verification of products across a supply chain. Counterfeit goods are a serious problem in Asia, damaging legitimate businesses and sometimes putting consumers at risk.
For example, China’s Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) recently exposed producers that manufactured thousands of ineffective vaccines backed by falsified documentation. Those vaccines were intended for children, highlighting the potential public-health consequences when supply chains are compromised.
Integrating VeChain’s tracking technology with NTT Docomo’s 5G network could strengthen product traceability and help prevent similar incidents in Japan by enabling faster, more reliable data transmission and real-time verification across distributed systems.
In a press release, VeChain stated:
“Our goal is to enhance and enrich our current data services capacity within traceability, supply chain management, and smartphones for our users.
With our ongoing effort to bring traceability use cases in Japan into our ecosystem, the 5G program will bring additional value to VeChain’s presence in the region.”
VeChain has since expanded beyond supply chain-focused tools and launched its own blockchain platform, Thor.
The company describes Thor as an enterprise-grade platform designed to bridge blockchain and the physical world. It includes a governance framework, an economic model, and IoT integration intended to support practical, real-world applications.
VeChain is reportedly holding discussions with another prominent Japanese company as it grows its presence in the market.
