Whalebone, a leading cybersecurity provider for the telecommunications sector, has partnered with O2 Telefónica Germany to introduce “O2 Onlineschutz,” a white-labeled version of Whalebone Aura that provides an extra layer of protection for O2 Telefónica’s B2C customers. The collaboration began two years ago at Wayra Germany, O2 Telefónica’s open innovation hub, and is now available commercially.
Whalebone is well known in the telco mass-market cybersecurity space. Richard Malovic, CEO of Whalebone, highlighted the importance of the partnership: “Partnering with O2 Germany is a significant milestone for us. I appreciate the innovative spirit of O2 Telefónica’s open innovation hub, Wayra, which supported us during the crucial stages of the deal. O2 doesn’t just talk about innovation—O2 truly ‘Can do.’”
Whalebone says it is pursuing a broader mission to protect one billion people from cyber threats by the end of the decade, and this agreement with O2 Telefónica Germany represents a step toward that goal.
Florian Bogenschütz, CEO of Wayra Germany, commented: “This partnership demonstrates how effective collaboration between corporates and startups can be for scaling innovations. Innovation hubs like Wayra play a decisive role in enabling the rapid and easy adoption of startup technologies within large companies, and I’m pleased this cooperation with Whalebone has succeeded.”
Whalebone also ranked 20th on the Financial Times’ Sifted Leaderboard 2024 for Central Europe. The European Commission has appointed Whalebone as Consortium Leader for the EU’s DNS4EU project, underscoring the company’s expertise in secure DNS services.
Real-time threat detection for telco customers
Whalebone’s technology uses machine learning to detect and block malicious websites and domains in real time. By partnering with O2 Telefónica Germany, Whalebone is extending this protection to a broader audience across Germany to help counter rising cyber threats.
O2 Telefónica Germany customers can now choose to strengthen their security and protect mobile devices from malicious content, malware, and other online threats. Because the solution operates at the network level, threats are intercepted before they reach end users, delivering protection with no impact on the user experience.
Markus von Böhlen, Director of Devices, Trading and Digital Life at O2 Telefónica Germany, said, “With O2 Onlineschutz, we offer our customers an innovative product that makes daily life easier. This brings us closer to our goal of improving and enriching customers’ lives through digital solutions. Products like this help us grow market share while democratizing access to digital services for everyone.”
