Disinformation: The Most Powerful Weapon Used by Cybercriminals

Cybersecurity firm Check Point Software warns that we have entered a new, heightened post-truth era as cybercriminal groups increasingly exploit artificial intelligence (AI). Using generative AI tools, attackers can spread disinformation that appears far more credible, enabling sophisticated campaigns that deliver harmful threats.

During the first three quarters of this year, Check Point Software’s research arm, CPR, found that one in 34 organizations worldwide experienced a ransomware attack — a 4 percent increase compared to the previous year. Cyberthreats are not only growing in number but are becoming more complex, more effective, and harder to detect. These attacks often involve data destruction and theft, and many stem from identity theft or from cybercriminals fabricating false information in disinformation campaigns to gain access to sensitive data.

AI and deepfake technologies are making ransomware campaigns more effective. One of the most common routes to sensitive data remains phishing, where attackers send fraudulent emails or text messages while pretending to be someone else. These messages used to be clumsy or visually off, making them easier to spot. Today, AI can craft emails and texts that mimic an organization or individual almost perfectly, making detection by the human eye much more difficult.

Another growing phishing tactic involves deepfakes: attackers manipulate video, images, and even voice calls to impersonate trusted people and extract sensitive information. Advances in these technologies have amplified the impact of ransomware attacks, which have remained one of the most significant cyberthreats over the past year and increased by 37 percent.

Mats Ekdahl, a security expert at Check Point Software, stresses the need for organizations to defend themselves against AI-driven attacks that forge, manipulate, and spread false information. He highlights the importance of proactive strategies to mitigate threats, investing in the development of cybersecurity, and integrating AI into defensive systems. As cyberattacks become more frequent, more effective, and more convincingly deceptive, maintaining a robust cybersecurity strategy that is regularly reviewed and updated is essential for preventive protection.
