Top Gear was a global sensation for the BBC until presenter Jeremy Clarkson was dismissed. Amazon seized the moment and signed Clarkson and his former co-hosts to produce an exclusive series called The Grand Tour after widespread public demand for the original cast’s return.
UK internet service provider TalkTalk anticipated the show’s popularity and took proactive steps to ensure its network could absorb the resulting increase in traffic. The Grand Tour is not only widely watched, it’s also streamed in 4K Ultra HD for many viewers, which places considerably greater demand on network capacity.
“Growing consumption of internet content will continue to drive the need for increased capacity,” said TalkTalk as it prepared for the launch.
Specifically for The Grand Tour, TalkTalk added 100 Gbps of capacity to its network. That increase is part of a broader capacity investment totaling 200 Gbps to support Amazon’s expanding library of premium content.
“The trend toward streaming shows on demand is only going to grow for our customers. That’s why we must keep our network ahead of the curve. In total, we’ve added an extra 200 Gbps of capacity specifically for Amazon video content, including The Grand Tour,” said Gary Steen, TalkTalk’s Chief Technology Officer.
The shift from traditional broadcast and cable TV to streaming services—often driven by a generation of ‘cord cutters’—is a major factor in rising bandwidth usage. Services like Amazon Video, Netflix, and Now TV have changed viewing habits, and online video now accounts for roughly 60–70 percent of overall internet traffic.
TalkTalk’s network can handle between 2 and 3 Tbps of traffic, so allocating an additional 100 Gbps for a single new show is notable. While such a large, targeted capacity boost is unusual, similar investments may become more common as streaming demand increases. These infrastructure upgrades can influence consumer bills over time, since providers factor network investment into service pricing and operating costs.
Amazon recommends a minimum connection speed of 3.5 Mbps for high-definition streaming, while 4K content (on supported TVs) requires about 25 Mbps. The first episode of The Grand Tour is now available, with new episodes released weekly on Fridays.
