Vodafone has introduced a new Internet of Things (IoT) solution designed to accelerate modernization within the water industry.
While many sectors are embracing digital transformation driven by Industry 4.0 technologies, water utilities have often lagged behind. Outdated monitoring systems and fragmented data architectures have hindered efficiency gains and made it difficult for organisations to meet regulatory and environmental targets.
Anne Sheehan, Business Director at Vodafone UK, said:
“There is growing demand on the UK water companies to increase efficiency and reduce wastage. We’ve worked closely with the water industry to identify a common problem and develop a simple solution.
The platform has been designed with simplicity in mind – you do not have to be a connectivity expert to benefit from IoT. We are making it as easy as possible to ensure water companies can benefit from cutting-edge technology and connectivity to meet important regulatory and environmental standards.”
Over the past three decades, many providers installed legacy monitoring equipment that now sits in silos, with data trapped behind incompatible protocols and formats. Fully replacing those systems would be costly and disruptive. Vodafone’s approach focuses on practical integration: a single, technology-agnostic data management platform plus a standardised device option that can bring both older and newer sensors into one cohesive system.
Vodafone outlines four core elements in its offering for water companies:
- Devices: Procurement and integration of devices and sensors, from smart meters to data loggers, with the ability to bring existing equipment into a unified management environment.
- Connectivity: NB‑IoT coverage that Vodafone states now reaches 98% of the UK’s geography, enabling reliable, low-power connectivity for distributed sensors.
- Data management: A single platform to manage both legacy and modern devices, consolidating disparate data sets. The platform acquires, orchestrates, stores, analyses and visualises data securely, so teams can act on insights more quickly.
- Service: Ongoing consultancy and collaboration to help organisations maximise value from their IoT deployments and achieve faster return on investment.
Damian Crawford, Head of Smart Networks and Leakage at Stantec, added:
“Vodafone’s smart water proposition is a game-changer for the water industry. While there is ample variety of water network telemetry equipment on the market, Vodafone can be unique in providing the water industry with one full end-to-end secure solution that is device agnostic, removing supplier lock-in and maximising existing assets.
Vodafone’s innovative solution has set a benchmark for the UK water industry, with the aim to deliver excellent service for water companies and their customers.”
Recently, IoT News reported that Vodafone completed a project to double its NB‑IoT site count, expanding low-power wide-area network coverage across the UK. Vodafone says it will continue to work with customers in uncovered locations to upgrade or add infrastructure where needed, handling those cases on an individual basis.
