Vodafone Romania has chosen Ericsson as its primary partner to upgrade the radio access network (RAN) and roll out nationwide 5G services.
Under a six-year agreement, Ericsson will supply 5G RAN products and solutions designed to increase network speeds, cut latency, and improve reliability for Vodafone Romania’s customers. The contract positions Ericsson as the main 5G RAN supplier responsible for deploying advanced radio equipment and software to strengthen the operator’s existing mobile network.
This initiative highlights Vodafone Romania’s strategic commitment to accelerate digital transformation and support the shift toward a highly connected society. By modernising the RAN, Vodafone aims to deliver faster, more consistent mobile experiences for consumers and businesses across the country.
“Building a future-ready, secure, energy-efficient network is crucial to support a digital society,” said Nicolae Vîlceanu, Vodafone Romania’s Chief Network Officer. “The partnership with Ericsson provides the technological foundations to stand up fast, reliable 5G networks that will have tremendous impact for our customers.”
Dragos Mircea Rebegea, Country Manager of Ericsson Romania, also emphasised the potential of the collaboration to spur broader industry change: “We are proud to partner with Vodafone Romania in building a network of the future. Our innovative technology not only enhances connectivity but also serves as a catalyst for industry transformation, laying the groundwork for a more interconnected digital society.”
Key elements of the deployment include Ericsson’s 5G RAN portfolio, featuring the Ericsson Antenna System and Massive MIMO technology. These solutions are intended to boost capacity and coverage, enabling enterprises and consumers to take full advantage of new 5G use cases such as enhanced mobile broadband, low-latency applications, and advanced IoT services.
Energy efficiency and sustainability are central to the project. Ericsson’s latest generation of radios and baseband systems (RAN Compute) are engineered to lower power consumption, helping Vodafone Romania reduce the environmental footprint of its network operations while improving performance and operational efficiency.
The rollout is expected to facilitate a range of economic and social benefits by providing more reliable, higher-capacity connectivity—supporting digital services, smart city initiatives, remote work, and connected industry applications throughout Romania.
