Vodafone and Meta Partner to Optimize Europe’s Mobile Networks

Vodafone and Meta have partnered to reduce network congestion and improve the mobile experience for users across Europe. Launched in June, the collaboration has already been rolled out in eleven European markets, targeting better performance during peak demand periods.

The initiative focuses on freeing up network capacity for all mobile customers, with special attention to improving playback of high-quality short-form videos. As mobile video consumption continues to grow rapidly, network infrastructure faces rising pressure. This effort aims to balance user experience and efficient use of existing capacity.

A pilot in the UK in April 2024 showed encouraging results. Over three weeks, optimisation measures reduced network traffic generated by Meta applications on Vodafone’s mobile network. That freed resources at some of Vodafone’s busiest 4G and 5G sites, delivering benefits for all subscribers in high-traffic locations such as shopping centres and transport hubs.

Alberto Ripepi, Chief Network Officer at Vodafone, said that Meta’s willingness to optimise video delivery sets an example for making more efficient use of existing network resources. Vodafone and Meta have implemented these optimisations across Vodafone’s European markets and plan to continue collaborating to identify further efficiencies.

The partnership is not limited to the two companies. Vodafone and Meta have indicated they are open to working with other industry participants to further improve network efficiency. This cooperative approach is intended to support the growth of new digital services, keep critical applications running smoothly in busy locations, and deliver energy savings through smarter resource use.

Meta is reinforcing its commitment to optimisation and performance. Gaya Nagarajan, Vice President of Network Engineering at Meta, described the work with Vodafone as a long-term partnership and said collaboration on video optimisation offers opportunities to innovate and help shape the future internet.

“We are committed to continuing our collaboration with innovative partners like Vodafone, device manufacturers, equipment vendors and the wider digital ecosystem to push the boundaries of video optimisation,” Nagarajan added.

As video continues to dominate internet traffic, partnerships like this can play a growing role in maintaining smooth, high-quality user experiences while managing network resources effectively. The Vodafone–Meta initiative demonstrates how operators and content providers can coordinate to ease congestion and improve service for everyone.

If successful at scale, this model could encourage similar collaborations across the technology and telecom sectors, promoting a more cooperative approach to common challenges in the digital era.
