The UK has invested more than £530 million this year to expand connectivity to over 330,000 premises, with a fresh £33 million commitment to connect more than 17,000 homes and businesses in rural Derbyshire to high‑speed broadband.
This Derbyshire rollout follows contracts awarded earlier in Shropshire, Cambridgeshire, New Forest, Norfolk, Suffolk, Hampshire, North East Staffordshire, and Oxfordshire, contributing to the overall investment exceeding £530 million.
Sachin Agrawal, UK Managing Director at Zoho Corporation, commented: “Investing in connectivity for rural areas is essential to empower regional businesses across the UK. Strong internet access helps unlock local economic growth, supports business location decisions, and enables a fairer distribution of opportunity and wealth nationwide.”
“Technology is central to creating a seamless experience for employees, whether they work from home or an office. Collaboration and real‑time communication tools let teams work together efficiently and keep staff connected regardless of location.”
Building Digital UK (BDUK) reports a significant milestone: 929,700 homes and businesses now have access to fast, reliable gigabit broadband.
Agrawal added: “Improved connectivity across the regions also gives businesses greater flexibility in choosing office locations, helping reduce overheads and move away from congested urban centres. This creates cost savings and supports employees who benefit from a more affordable lifestyle and closer family ties.”
Gigabit broadband enables users to download high‑definition films in under a minute, stream without interruptions, shop online smoothly, and run multiple devices at once. Faster connections reduce household bandwidth conflicts and help ensure uninterrupted entertainment and remote work capabilities.
Minister for Data and Digital Infrastructure Sir John Whittingdale said: “Project Gigabit has made significant progress this year in delivering modern connectivity across the UK. As we approach the holiday season, I hope access to gigabit speeds will benefit households and continue to create new opportunities for future generations. Our commitment to improving digital infrastructure reflects our dedication to a connected and prosperous future for all.”
The government’s target is 85 percent gigabit coverage by 2025 and full nationwide coverage by 2030. Current rollout progress is at 79 percent, with thousands of homes and businesses already upgraded to gigabit connections.
