T-Mobile has introduced “5G On Demand,” a portable private 5G network solution designed to simplify the deployment of advanced, data-driven networks across multiple industries.
Scheduled for commercial availability by the end of 2024, 5G On Demand is built to serve the changing needs of sectors such as media and entertainment, oil and gas, and construction, among others.
Although officially unveiled recently, 5G On Demand has already been used at high-profile events. It supported operations at the PGA Championship with CBS Sports and the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship with NBC Sports, improving workflow efficiency and enhancing the fan experience.
By integrating with Sony’s PDT-FP1 data transmitters and ultra-low-latency encoders/decoders, the system enabled Sony FX6 cameras to achieve glass-to-glass latency of under 100 milliseconds, demonstrating broadcast-quality performance without reliance on extensive cabling.
Delivering broadcast-grade video wirelessly — especially for multiple concurrent 4K cameras at 60 FPS — is challenging. Traditional cellular networks often face bandwidth limits and environmental obstacles, while setting up conventional infrastructure can be costly and complex.
5G On Demand addresses these challenges with a turnkey offering that delivers several benefits:
- Lower costs: Reduces dependence on fiber while still providing the bandwidth and low latency required for demanding applications.
- Affordability: Offers a more economical alternative to permanent, custom-built private networks that are expensive to deploy and maintain.
- Remote production support: Cuts the need for large onsite crews and heavy equipment, enabling more efficient remote workflows.
- Operational efficiency: Simplifies capture, transmission, and production workflows for media and other data-intensive use cases.
- Faster deployment and flexibility: Enables rapid setup and adaptability on the nation’s largest and fastest 5G network, supporting dynamic operational needs.
Mishka Dehghan, SVP of Strategy, Product and Solutions Engineering at T-Mobile Business Group, commented: “With 5G On Demand, T-Mobile is changing how businesses and organizations deploy private 5G networks by focusing on cost-efficiency and ease of use.
“We’re making it simpler than ever to establish powerful networks so teams can concentrate on delivering outstanding content and services without the burdens of traditional infrastructure.”
By offering a portable, simplified approach to private 5G networks, T-Mobile aims to help organizations adapt quickly to technological advances and evolving customer expectations while keeping operations efficient and cost-effective.
