UK grime artist Stormzy will headline the nation’s first 5G-powered concert on May 29 as part of EE’s UK network launch.
EE confirmed earlier this week that it will switch on the country’s first 5G network on May 30 and has planned a series of high-profile demonstrations to showcase the technology’s capabilities. The operator said partners including Niantic and Google would help create immersive experiences that highlight what 5G can enable.
Stormzy is one of the UK’s most prominent contemporary artists, with international recognition. He attracted widespread attention last year at the Brit Awards when he used his performance to call on the UK prime minister to address support for survivors of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
EE is keeping specifics about the Stormzy concert confidential, including the venue, but promises a spectacular audio-visual production designed to demonstrate the low-latency, high-bandwidth potential of 5G.
One of 5G’s most promising applications is real-time virtual reality. EE plans to stream the event in 360-degree VR so fans can enjoy a front-row experience at selected EE stores in the operator’s launch cities: Cardiff, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh.
Alongside high-profile demonstrations, EE will continue promoting its 5G service over the coming months and years. The operator has already announced plans to power the mobile network at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, where Stormzy is also scheduled to headline.
Tickets for the 5G concert are free, but interested fans must enter a public ballot for the chance to attend. EE will notify successful applicants with full event details shortly before the performance.
