SES and Intelsat End Acquisition Talks: What It Means for Satellite Industry

SES has confirmed that it has ended merger discussions with Intelsat, halting plans that would have further consolidated the satellite internet sector.

The deal, first reported in March, would have combined two major satellite operators and, according to Bloomberg, was expected to be worth more than $10 billion including debt. Such a merger would have created a significantly larger competitor in the market.

SES issued a statement announcing that talks have concluded, while Intelsat said it routinely holds strategic discussions with potential partners and does not comment on the specifics or outcomes of those conversations.

The collapse of these negotiations slows the recent move toward consolidation across the satellite internet industry, a trend that has sparked scrutiny due to its potential impact on competition and market dynamics.

Last July, French operator Eutelsat revealed a merger plan with Britain’s OneWeb, a strategic pairing intended to better position them against rivals such as SpaceX’s Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper. That agreement underlined how satellite providers are pursuing combinations and alliances to expand coverage, scale operations, and compete with emerging low-Earth-orbit constellations.

In recent years the satellite internet market has seen rapid technological advancement and heightened competition as companies invest in new constellations, ground infrastructure, and service platforms. These developments have prompted operators to consider mergers and partnerships to secure market share, reduce costs, and accelerate deployment.

With the SES–Intelsat talks ended, the sector remains open for other strategic moves. Companies seeking growth can still pursue alliances, acquisitions, or joint ventures to strengthen their market positions as demand for global connectivity continues to rise.
