Australian telecommunications provider Optus has announced the first 50 sites that will receive 5G service under a rollout powered by Ericsson.
The company aims to construct 1,200 5G sites across Australia by March 2020, with the initial deployments concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne.
Kent Wu, Optus’ Head of Network Access Planning & Quality, said:
“This is another significant milestone for Optus as we continue our customer-focused 5G rollout. We are building a more dynamic and innovative 5G network for the benefit of our customers.”
Optus is adopting a multi-vendor strategy for its 5G deployment. This approach excludes Huawei following Australia’s government ban on the vendor over national security concerns.
“We are working closely with Ericsson to perform critical interoperability testing so we can offer a compatible 5G home broadband product and include these sites in our expressions-of-interest campaign,” Wu added.
“Our multi-vendor strategy demonstrates how Optus intends to deliver a flexible, innovative 5G network that benefits customers.”
