O2 Says 5G Could Cut Household Bills by £450 a Year

A new analysis from O2, part of the Telefónica group, outlines the economic benefits the company expects 5G to deliver across Britain.

By boosting productivity and enabling smarter services, the report estimates that 5G could create roughly £6 billion in annual savings. On average, each household could save about £450 a year across energy, council, and food costs through more efficient systems and services enabled by 5G connectivity.

Local authorities stand to recover an estimated £2.8 billion by deploying 5G-powered solutions such as smart street lighting, optimized refuse collection and enhanced social care provision.

With an ageing population putting increasing pressure on social care budgets, O2 projects that 5G-enabled telehealth, remote monitoring and related technologies could reduce social care costs by around £890 million.

Wider pressure on the NHS could also be eased thanks to faster, more reliable connectivity. If approximately five percent of GP consultations moved to video appointments, physical GP visits could fall by around four million annually.

That reduction in in-person appointments would save clinicians roughly one million hours, freeing time to treat patients who need in-person care and helping shorten waiting times. Less employee absence due to more accessible remote consultations and health monitoring is estimated to add about £1.3 billion in productivity gains.

Commuters would benefit as well: 5G-enabled sensors on railway lines can support predictive maintenance, cutting delays and reducing lost productivity by an estimated £440 million. On average, rail commuters could regain about 2.6 hours each year.

Road users would see improvements too. Smart, 5G-supported road management systems are expected to reduce time spent stuck in traffic by roughly 10 percent. Pedestrians can also gain faster journeys when route planning is optimized using real-time street infrastructure data such as traffic signal timing.

Derek McManus, O2’s Chief Operating Officer, commented:

“There are more mobile connections in Britain than there are people and the demand for mobile frequency and easier access is only increasing. It’s clear from our report that 5G technology will play a vital role in ensuring that all citizens get the mobile service they deserve.

But while 5G promises a range of unprecedented benefits, we should be clear that these won’t be achieved without collective investment and collaboration. That means complete alignment from operators, public service providers, local authorities, landlords and technology companies to explore new opportunities for better connectivity and denser coverage.”

O2’s analysis highlights how 5G could materially benefit the national economy and improve everyday life for individuals across multiple sectors. The report underlines the importance of coordinated investment and partnership to realize those gains as the technology is rolled out.
