Nokia Rebrands at MWC to Promote Networks Meet Cloud Vision

At MWC Barcelona, Nokia unveiled a refreshed logo and brand identity, signaling its intention to stake a stronger claim in the networking technology market.

“We’re unleashing the exponential potential of networks and their power to help reshape the way we all live and work,” the company said in a brief social post. In a more measured statement, Nokia president Pekka Lundmark described the rebrand as the culmination of changes made over recent years, including a revised operating model, adoption of new cultural priorities, and a refreshed growth strategy.

Lundmark outlined six strategic pillars that will guide Nokia going forward: increasing market share among service providers through continued technological leadership; growing the enterprise customer segment; actively managing the company’s portfolio; pursuing opportunities beyond traditional mobile devices; adopting new business models such as “as-a-service”; and transforming environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives into a competitive advantage.

The emphasis on opportunities “beyond mobile devices” is particularly notable. While Nokia has long been a major player in telecom and networking, the rebrand signals a deliberate move to shed legacy constraints and expand into adjacent markets.

Nokia’s pivot toward software and cloud-native services is not new. The company entered the software-as-a-service (SaaS) space in late 2021, acknowledging the convergence of 5G, cloud-native architectures, and SaaS delivery models. At that time Nokia also highlighted its leadership in essential 5G patents, reporting more than 4,000 patent families; that figure has since grown to over 4,500. Just last week, Nokia and Bosch unveiled new 5G-based precision positioning technology aimed at Industry 4.0 use cases, and the partners are jointly exploring the evolution toward 6G networks.

The rebrand reflects both Nokia’s present capabilities and its future ambitions. “Our updated company strategy is supported by our technology strategy, which details how networks will need to evolve to meet the demands of the metaverse era,” Lundmark wrote in a company blog.

“As the world increasingly relies on connectivity, traditional networking attributes must integrate with the flexibility and scalability of cloud,” he added. “These are networks that go beyond simply connecting people and things. They are adaptable, autonomous, and consumable, with the potential to bring the transformative power of networking to every industry.

“We are uniquely well positioned to lead this evolution in networks through our technology leadership and best-of-breed portfolio across fixed, mobile, and cloud.”
