Nokia Completes First Phase of 5G Rollout at Port of Zeebrugge

Nokia and Belgium’s Port of Zeebrugge have completed the first phase of a 5G-ready, industrial-grade private wireless network deployment.

Using the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud platform, the Port of Zeebrugge can now provide private wireless connectivity to more than 100 endpoints spanning core port operations.

This private network enables the port to introduce new and improved services that boost operational efficiency and help position Zeebrugge as a leader in port modernisation and digital transformation. The network supports real-time tracking, analysis, and management of connected devices across multiple port applications. It also lays the groundwork for faster innovation and automation through IoT deployments, autonomous vehicles, augmented reality, and drone operations.

Rick Goetinck, CEO of the Port of Zeebrugge, commented: “The introduction of an advanced private wireless network will serve as a catalyst for our partners to develop and deploy new solutions across the logistics value chain. Nokia, together with local service provider Citymesh, demonstrated strong 5G capabilities during the platform deployment, making phase one a complete success.”

Earlier this month, Nokia expanded its Worldwide IoT Network Grid (WING) managed service to include 5G and edge capabilities. The updated WING offering helps operators enter the early IoT market without major infrastructure investments, enabling new business models and expanding into sectors such as critical public services, remote healthcare, connected vehicles, and real-time industrial monitoring and control.

In a related development last year, the Port of Rotterdam announced the activation of its IoT platform with an initial hydro/meteo application. That system leverages an extensive sensor network to deliver precise, up-to-date water and weather data to support shipping planning and management. It also provides access to advanced technologies including edge computing, real-time analytics, artificial intelligence, high-precision data, and blockchain.
