External Ultra Slim BDXL Blu-ray & M-DISC Burner (USB-C) - ASUS
Product description
Model number: 90DD02G0-M29000.
This ASUS SBW-06D5H-U is an ultra-slim external Blu-ray burner that supports BDXL and M-DISC media in addition to standard Blu-ray, DVD and CD formats. The drive ships in a compact black enclosure with a gloss-finish top and matte sides, designed to sit flat on a desk or slip into a bag for portable use.
Included in the box are two detachable connection cables: a USB-C to USB 3.1 Micro-B SuperSpeed cable and a dual USB-A to USB 3.1 Micro-B SuperSpeed cable for systems that require two USB-A ports for power. The drive uses a USB 3.1 SuperSpeed interface for data transfer and is bus-powered, eliminating the need for an external power adapter on most systems.
Operation is straightforward: the tray-loading mechanism accepts CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays and BDXL discs; the unit reads and writes media and supports M-DISC archival burning. The detachable cable design lets you swap connectors as needed. The housing is primarily plastic with a glossy top surface that resists impact but shows fingerprints and can pick up surface scratches over time.
Pros
- BDXL and M-DISC capable for high-capacity and archival burns
- Ultra-slim profile with detachable cables for portability
- USB 3.1 SuperSpeed connection and broad OS compatibility
Cons
- Glossy top attracts fingerprints and can scratch
- Included USB-C cable is short; alternative cable may be needed
- Dual-USB-A cable option uses two ports on some systems
VerdictA reliable, compact external optical drive that handles CD/DVD/Blu-ray read/write tasks including BDXL and M-DISC formats. Its slim, detachable-cable design makes it portable and easy to connect to modern laptops. Expect good cross-platform compatibility and straightforward plug-and-play use, though the glossy top shows fingerprints and surfaces can scratch. If you need a full-featured external bu

Very satisfactory device (German)
BD burners are getting rare. As an external slim unit, this replaces an internal drive and performs the same job—better than not having one at all.

Night-and-day difference
After failing with two inexpensive drives, this one performed consistently. If you want reliability, this is a noticeable step up.

High quality build
Feels solid and reads even slightly damaged discs reliably. My only issue is that the top surface scratches easily.

Stopped reading after months
Worked fine initially but began failing to read Blu-rays after about four months of use.

Performs as expected
I can’t vouch for advanced burning tests, but streaming multiple seasons of shows has been trouble-free with no skips.

Good Linux compatibility, note about connectors
Works well with recent Ubuntu releases. Although it comes with a USB-C cable, the device’s port is a USB 3.1 Micro-B Superspeed connector, so the very short USB-C lead must be used or the dual-USB-A cable will occupy two A ports. Blu-ray playback in VLC was smooth.

Worth the upgrade
It costs more than cheap drives, but this ASUS unit is solid: it reads and writes CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays including BDXL. The removable cable is a big convenience. The glossy finish shows fingerprints, but in low-light use it’s not distracting. I tried a cheaper model that had playback and compatibility headaches and a hardwired short cable. This one worked right away—plug and play—and bundled software is optional; VLC handles playback and many ripping tasks. Make sure your region settings in your media player are configured for Blu-ray playback.
