Deutsche Telekom Upgrades Routers to Showcase Smart Home Features

Deutsche Telekom is expanding the capabilities of its Speedport Smart router to deliver a smart home experience to over one million customers.

Effective immediately, Speedport Smart routers can now manage smart home devices in addition to providing phone, Internet, and TV services. The routers support the DECT ULE cordless standard, enabling seamless integration with devices such as smoke detectors and thermostats, along with other compatible sensors and actuators.

A firmware update for existing routers was rolled out in bulk, upgrading approximately 170,000 devices in a single deployment. Moving forward, Deutsche Telekom plans to ship around 1.2 million smart-capable routers annually. “We have been a reliable partner to our customers for many years when it comes to telecommunications and entertainment. So it’s only natural to act as partners for security, convenience, and energy conservation too,” said Niek Jan van Damme of Deutsche Telekom.

The company positions this enhancement as an entry point to additional services: undecided customers can try the Magenta SmartHome Basic package to evaluate the benefits, with the option to upgrade to the full feature set at any time. This approach aims to introduce users to smart home functionality while offering a clear path to premium services if they want expanded capabilities.

Deutsche Telekom also reported solid financial performance in Q1 2017. Group net revenue increased by 5.8% and free cash flow rose by 50%, while net profit experienced an expected decline. The company reconfirmed its full-year guidance, targeting EBITDA of €22.2 billion and free cash flow of €5.5 billion. CEO Tim Höttges noted that results were steady and largely in line with internal expectations, describing the performance as reliable and on track.

This router upgrade strengthens Deutsche Telekom’s smart home proposition by combining connectivity, customer reach, and device compatibility. By supporting DECT ULE through the Speedport Smart platform, the provider can offer a broad range of home safety and comfort solutions that work directly through the router, reducing the need for separate hubs and simplifying setup for customers.

For customers considering a smart home setup, the benefits include native router-based control, improved device interoperability, and the convenience of integrating essential devices like smoke detectors and thermostats without purchasing additional gateway hardware. The firmware rollout for existing customers reduces friction, while the continued distribution of new smart-capable routers will expand the potential user base.

Deutsche Telekom’s strategy pairs network services with smart home functionality, aiming to add value for existing subscribers and attract new users seeking an integrated, easy-to-manage home automation experience. By offering a basic trial package alongside an upgrade path, the company provides a low-commitment way for households to discover how smart devices can enhance safety, comfort, and energy efficiency.
