CUJO AI’s latest cybersecurity report reveals that more than two-thirds of home networks face online threats each month.
CUJO AI, which uses artificial intelligence to secure networks, based its analysis on anonymized data from the 1.8 billion real-world devices it protects.
From 1 May 2022 to 1 November 2022, CUJO AI reports blocking over two billion threats, averaging up to 8,000 blocked threats per minute.
Alarmingly, 67 percent of home networks encountered at least one threat monthly.
“Cybercriminals are finding new ways to target home users,” says Leonardas Marozas, Head of CUJO AI Security Research Lab.
The firm found that 56 percent of internet users attempted to open at least one phishing link each month, putting finances and personal data at risk. In October alone, CUJO AI reports blocking 66,801,679 phishing attempts.
CUJO AI also observes a sharp rise in adware activity over weekends—up to 400 percent higher—while noting that adware activity has been increasing throughout the week as well.
Botnets continue to exploit vulnerable IoT devices to grow their networks of compromised equipment. CUJO AI highlights that the number of end-of-life and unsupported devices is rising, which increases the risk to home networks.
Recently, Arlo faced criticism for a new end-of-life policy that discontinues support for several connected security cameras over a relatively short timeframe.
As a prominent manufacturer, Arlo drew more attention than most, but many smaller device makers offer even fewer guarantees or guarantees that are unclear.
“These attacks are evolving, and many users struggle to find the right tools to protect their devices, data, homes and businesses,” Marozas concludes. “Protecting smart equipment can be extremely difficult for the average user.”
