A recent survey shows that almost everyone is eagerly anticipating the arrival of 5G, and many are willing to pay a premium if the new technology effectively resolves current connectivity problems.
The study by MATRIXX Software, which surveyed more than 4,000 mobile users in the United States and the United Kingdom, found that consumers view 5G as a potential solution to persistent mobile connectivity issues. Most respondents said they would pay for a 5G mobile connection if it delivers a noticeably better and more reliable experience.
Roughly 70% of participants across both countries reported dissatisfaction with their existing 4G service, citing slow speeds, unreliable performance in crowded areas, and frequent outages. At the same time, about half of the respondents remain somewhat skeptical about 5G despite the extensive promotion surrounding the technology.
One-third of consumers believe 5G is the definitive answer to their connectivity problems. Furthermore, 87% plan to upgrade to 5G-capable devices. A large portion of users are prepared to invest for improved service: 78% said they would pay more for 5G-enabled devices, 88% would pay extra for 5G network access, and 76% are willing to switch carriers to obtain 5G connectivity.
In the United States, AT&T recently unveiled a 5G roadmap for business focused on three pillars: mobile 5G, fixed wireless, and edge computing. The operator highlighted that millions of businesses are searching for innovations that provide a competitive edge. Emerging technologies such as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) depend on robust connectivity to deliver measurable business benefits, and 5G could provide the necessary foundation.
