Many experts expected China to lead in 5G deployment, but a recent forecast reveals an unprecedented acceleration in rollout pace.
Analysts at Mobile Experts, known for accurate 5G predictions over the past four years, updated their outlook after receiving strong reports from China. Those reports prompted a significant revision of their latest forecast.
The firm expects 5G to expand steadily across much of the world over several years. China, however, will pursue a far more aggressive timetable.
Joe Madden, Principal Analyst at Mobile Experts, explained:
“For most of the world, 5G deployment will be spread over many years and will solidify gradually.
China is the exception: political priorities are driving a nationwide deployment at remarkable speed. We ran the numbers, and the outcome will surprise much of the industry.
We previously constrained our forecast because of expected supply chain capacity limits, but recent major investments in component capacity have led us to raise our 2019 projections.”
The company’s report provides a comprehensive technical and market analysis of components used in remote radio heads, including ASICs, FPGAs, ADCs, DACs, LDMOS, GaN, PLLs, and RF elements.
“As Massive MIMO moves toward lower power levels, the semiconductor dollar content per transceiver will fall sharply, yet every component type will ship in unprecedented volumes with higher integration levels,” Madden noted.
“Overall, 5G will increase the value allocation per remote radio head for power transistors, ADCs/DACs, and processors because of Massive MIMO and the broader bandwidth of 5G signals.”
China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom are expected to jointly deploy very large numbers of base stations in the early months of 2019, marking the first year of large-scale deployment.
Mobile Experts calls this pronounced ramp-up the “China Surge,” projecting it to continue through 2021. After 2021, the report anticipates China’s pace will align more closely with global deployment rates.
