AWTG to Showcase O-RAN Innovations at MWC Barcelona 2024

Engineering services and technology solutions provider AWTG LTD will showcase its latest 5G and 6G advancements as a lead partner in the SCONDA (Small Cells ORAN in Dense Areas) consortium at the 2025 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

The SCONDA consortium brings together Three, Mavenir, Freshwave Group, PI Works, the University of Surrey, the University of Glasgow and Accenture, with AWTG leading the programme.

SCONDA addresses the commercial and technical challenges involved in deploying Open RAN and 5G within high-density urban areas. Funded through the UK’s Open Networks Ecosystem competition, SCONDA is the first project to integrate Open RAN and traditional RAN technologies specifically for dense city environments.

At Hall 7, Stand 7D67, AWTG will present the SCONDA initiative, highlight key milestones and reveal recent developments. The programme will deliver the world’s first Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) deployment in a high-density environment — Glasgow city centre — implemented on behalf of mobile operator Three.

This O-RAN deployment is fully integrated with Three’s existing 4G and 5G infrastructure, designed to improve coverage, capacity and interoperability across the combined networks.

At MWC 2025, AWTG will demonstrate its Open RAN portfolio, including Hybrid RAN solutions that enable network operators to integrate public mobile networks with private enterprise networks.

AWTG’s Mobile Private Network offering also includes FlexRAN, a platform that enables businesses across industries to deploy private mobile networks. FlexRAN can be tied into private IT systems and operational processes to enhance control, security and operational efficiency.

AWTG will showcase its RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC), which includes features aimed at improving end-user experience and 5G performance. AWTG describes the RIC as providing seamless mobility, robust configuration management and consistent, efficient network operations.

In addition to live demonstrations, AWTG will present a portfolio of complementary technologies, including AI-enhanced network functions and immersive VR experiences to illustrate practical use cases and performance benefits.
