AT&T and AST SpaceMobile Enable Satellite Video Calls on Regular Smartphones

A satellite video call was completed using regular smartphones over AT&T’s spectrum, enabled by AST SpaceMobile’s satellite network. The demonstration relied on the BlueBird satellites launched in September 2024 and marks a major step toward commercial satellite-assisted services for consumer devices.

This milestone builds on prior achievements in satellite-enabled mobile communications. In June 2023, AST SpaceMobile executed the first video call over AT&T spectrum using the BlueWalker 3 satellite. The BlueBird deployment now brings greater capacity and resilience, moving the industry closer to widespread, space-based connectivity for everyday users.

A satellite video call without specialist equipment

AST SpaceMobile initiated the video call from Midland, Texas, and AT&T received it in Dallas. The exchange used space-based communication technology interoperable with standard smartphones, demonstrating that two-way video can work without any special hardware in users’ hands.

Jeff McElfresh, Chief Operating Officer at AT&T, said: “We know our customers want connectivity wherever they are, and they deserve a simple, seamless experience from one provider. We are striving to provide everyone, from urban centers to remote areas, with access to reliable connectivity. This is about more than technology; it’s about empowering people and communities everywhere.”

For an industry defined by continual innovation, the significance of this demonstration extends beyond technical progress: it represents a societal shift toward more inclusive global communications.

From public safety to mission-critical connectivity

The AT&T and AST SpaceMobile partnership aims not only to enable consumer calls but also to deliver reliable, mission-critical capabilities. In coordination with the FirstNet Authority, AT&T has already tested essential features such as mission-critical push-to-talk and “always-on” priority and preemption.

Combining these features with satellite connectivity positions AT&T to offer advanced communication services to America’s first responders via FirstNet, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive public safety network.

AT&T is incorporating emergency connectivity tools into its service offerings for compatible devices, including peer-to-peer messaging and access to emergency services via satellite, increasing resilience for users in areas with limited terrestrial coverage.

A glimpse into the future

Enabling consumer-grade smartphones to connect directly to satellites represents more than a technical achievement; it signals a future where geographic isolation no longer precludes reliable broadband communication. As satellite connectivity standards advance, AT&T and AST SpaceMobile are helping to create a reality where two-way broadband is available even in remote locations.

Beyond everyday convenience, this capability has important implications for public safety, disaster response, and emergency services. For first responders and people in hard-to-reach areas, direct satellite links can mean timely access to assistance and life-saving communication.

Jeff McElfresh emphasized the broader impact: “This is more than about connecting phones to satellites—it’s about bridging the digital divide and ensuring that everyone, everywhere, can be part of an interconnected future. This technology empowers communities and creates opportunities for people no matter how remote their location.”

This recent BlueBird demonstration follows a similar space-based video call showcased by another operator in the United Kingdom last month, underscoring global momentum in integrating satellite links with consumer mobile services.
