AI Optimism Could Lead to Major Consequences

Trend Micro today publishes a new study showing that an increasing number of organizations are adopting AI to strengthen their cybersecurity. At the same time, concerns are growing that AI technologies may expand attack surfaces and expose organizations to new cyber threats.

The survey indicates that 91 percent of Swedish companies use AI-driven tools as part of their cybersecurity strategy, and an additional 7 percent are exploring potential use cases. Overall, 99 percent of respondents have a positive view of AI implementation. Nearly half (45 percent) also say that deploying automated or AI-driven tools is the highest priority in their cybersecurity efforts over the next 12 months.

However, this optimism comes with a serious caveat. A full 98 percent of respondents believe AI will have a negative impact on their organization’s cyber risk profile over the next three to five years. More than six in ten (64 percent) expect a larger number of more complex AI-driven attacks and foresee the need to rethink and fundamentally update their security strategies.

“AI holds enormous potential and for many is already an essential part of strengthening cyber defenses, for example by identifying anomalies more quickly or automating time-consuming tasks,” says Martin Fribrock, Country Manager Sweden at Trend Micro. “But attackers are just as quick to leverage AI for their own purposes, creating a rapidly evolving threat landscape. Our research and real-world tests make it clear that security must be built into AI systems from the start. There is simply too much at stake not to include security considerations from day one.”

As AI becomes more deeply integrated into corporate IT environments, Trend Micro urges security leaders to proactively assess the expanding threat landscape and implement protective measures at every stage of AI deployment.
