A Research and Markets report shows that Argentina’s telecommunications revenue fell sharply in 2014, dropping 17.1% in US dollar terms as the peso was devalued. Overall telecom service revenue is projected to see only modest growth, rising from $9.36 billion in 2014 to $9.96 billion by 2018.
In 2014 the mobile segment accounted for 73.4% of total telecom revenue, supported by 62.22 million SIM connections. Mobile broadband represented a significant portion of that base, making up 41.2% of all SIMs.
Fixed-line voice connections are expected to continue their decline as consumers shift to mobile services. The number of fixed telephony lines is forecast to fall to 8.40 million in 2018 from 10.54 million in 2014, a decrease of 20.3%. At the same time, VoIP lines delivered over DSL networks are projected to grow their market share from 19.8% in 2014 to 31.9% in 2018.
The fixed broadband market is also set to expand, with total accounts forecast to reach 7.66 million by 2018. xDSL is expected to remain the dominant last-mile access technology during the period, while cable modem and FTTx subscriptions are also likely to increase, contributing to a more diverse broadband mix.
The study, titled “Telecom Series 2015: Argentina,” is part of a broader Telecom Series that analyzes key telecommunications markets across Latin America. Major operators discussed in the report include Telefónica, Telecom, Nextel, Cablevisión, Claro and Movistar.
The report offers detailed market data and trend analysis for stakeholders monitoring Argentina’s telecom sector and provides forecasts to help evaluate operator performance and technology adoption through 2018.
