SK Telecom has announced it has chosen Ericsson’s Cloud Packet Core to power its 5G network.
Ericsson’s Cloud Packet Core assists service providers in smoothly transitioning to a 5G Core standalone architecture. The solution gives operators greater visibility and control over traffic and applications by determining the optimal quality of service and enforcing it through appropriate policy controls. This enables more efficient traffic management and improved delivery of differentiated services.
Jung Chang-kwan, Vice President and head of the Infra Engineering Group at SK Telecom, said: “By utilising Ericsson’s Cloud Packet Core network solution, which streamlines network operations, we will unlock the full potential of new 5G-enabled use cases with greater efficiency.”
Ericsson’s Mobility Report, published recently, forecasts strong global 5G growth over the coming years. The report projects that 5G subscriptions will exceed 2.6 billion within the next six years and that 5G coverage will reach around 65 percent of the world. It also expects total mobile subscriptions — including older-generation networks — to grow from about 8 billion to 8.9 billion in that period. By 2025, more than a quarter of global subscriptions are expected to be 5G, accounting for roughly 45 percent of worldwide mobile data traffic.
In addition, Ericsson has announced a collaboration with NVIDIA to develop technologies that help communication service providers build virtualised 5G radio access networks (vRAN). This partnership aims to accelerate the rollout of AI- and IoT-driven services by enabling more flexible, software-defined radio networks. Commercialising virtualised RAN technologies can reduce time-to-market for services such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and cloud gaming, while offering operators operational agility and improved scalability.
