Ericsson will present its latest 5G innovations for rail transport at InnoTrans, the leading trade fair for transport technology and mobility solutions.
At the event, the Swedish telecom company will demonstrate how its 5G Corridor and Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) offerings can enhance both passenger and freight services. These solutions are designed to modernize onboard connectivity and operational communications across rail networks.
The 5G Corridors concept involves deploying high-capacity 5G coverage along railway lines to deliver gigabit-class speeds to passengers. That connectivity enables reliable video streaming, remote work, and uninterrupted communications while traveling. For operators, 5G Corridors open new possibilities for value-added onboard services such as live journey updates, real-time infotainment and improved customer information systems.
FRMCS is developed as the successor to the legacy GSM-R system that many rail networks currently use. Created in collaboration with the International Union of Railways (UIC) and industry partners, FRMCS leverages LTE and 5G technologies to support low-latency, high-reliability data exchange between trains and control centers. This modernized communications framework aims to strengthen operational safety, enable more efficient traffic management and support new digital services for rail operators.
“We believe that 5G and FRMCS technologies will propel rail communications into a new era, improving safety, efficiency and the passenger experience,” says Magnus Packendorff, Head of Mission Critical at Ericsson.
“Our goal is to help railways and mobile operators migrate from GSM-R to FRMCS. By working together, stakeholders can adopt advanced technologies that bring tangible benefits to the railway industry and its customers.”
Ericsson joins more than 2,700 international exhibitors at InnoTrans and expects to showcase its FRMCS and 5G Corridor demonstrations to a global audience of roughly 130,000 visitors representing over 130 countries.
“InnoTrans is the most important event on the rail and transport calendar. We are excited to participate this year as a leading mobile network supplier and to present our current FRMCS and 5G Corridor solutions to industry professionals,” says Daniel Leimbach, Head of Customer Unit Western Europe at Ericsson.
“We look forward to four days of technical discussions, product demonstrations and collaboration on the future of rail communications.”
In addition to live demonstrations on the exhibition floor, Ericsson will take part in the InnoTrans Convention program. Katrin Bachert, a key account manager for service providers, will join a panel discussion about Germany’s Gigabit Innovation Track (GINT) project, highlighting practical deployments and lessons learned.
“As a trusted partner and technology leader, Ericsson is dedicated to working with railways and mobile operators to deliver resilient, secure and high-performing connectivity that meets the needs of both passengers and freight services,” Packendorff adds.
