Ericsson has announced plans to hire 250 people at its R&D centre in Athlone, Ireland, to support the continued growth of 5G technologies.
The new positions will be based at Ericsson’s software development campus in Athlone, one of the largest R&D facilities in the country. The roles are designed to strengthen the company’s cloud-native capabilities and advance next-generation telecom solutions.
“This significant announcement by Ericsson, a company with a presence in Ireland since 1957 and an R&D facility in Athlone since 1979, is excellent news and demonstrates this global leader’s continued commitment to its operations here,” said Martin Shanahan, CEO of the Industrial Development Agency (IDA) Ireland.
He added that the next generation of technology developed in Athlone will set industry standards and that the jobs and associated investment will have a substantial impact on the local and regional economy. “I wish Ericsson every success with this expansion and want to assure the team of IDA Ireland’s ongoing support,” Shanahan said.
The 250 hires will include cloud-native software developers, engineers, and architects at various career stages. These roles will contribute to Ericsson’s work across RAN (Radio Access Network), management, automation, and orchestration offerings.
“This announcement underscores our global reputation as a world-class R&D software development centre,” said Denis Dullea, Head of Research and Development at Ericsson Athlone. “Our team here already plays a critical role in developing Ericsson products, services, and solutions that enable limitless connectivity and make new possibilities achievable.”
Dullea emphasized that the additional hires will enhance the centre’s ability to deliver cloud-native technology benefits to Ericsson’s global customer base through its RAN, management, automation, and orchestration solutions.
Ericsson plans to recruit the 250 new staff members over the next three years. The company’s overall presence in Ireland has expanded by 25 percent over the past five years and now totals about 1,400 employees.
“This is really great news. Ericsson is expanding further, adding 250 new jobs to the 1,400 the company already employs here,” said Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment. “These new roles in cloud-native technologies create exciting opportunities for the Midlands and reflect strong confidence in Athlone and Ireland as a whole. I thank Ericsson for their ongoing commitment to our country and acknowledge the Irish-based team whose efforts were crucial in securing this investment.”
