YouView Reaches 400K Users; Android App and Internet Channels Incoming

YouView is a relatively new set-top box and TV platform in the UK, created through a partnership of the country’s major broadcasters and communications companies.

CEO Richard Halton has confirmed that the service has reached 400,000 users, and the company plans to expand by adding internet-delivered channels and launching a dedicated Android app.

The platform is backed by leading broadcasters—BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5—together with partners such as BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva, giving YouView a strong foundation and industry support.

After purchasing a YouView-compatible set-top box, users can access the service at no additional cost. Similar to rival services like Freesat, the platform receives traditional broadcast channels, but YouView adds internet-enabled features such as interactivity and catch-up TV, provided the box is connected to the internet.

The upcoming addition of internet channels will broaden viewing choice significantly. Initially, these channels will expand the content lineup but may not offer every expected feature—such as pausing live streams—right away. YouView has indicated that functionality will grow over time as the offering matures.

Halton commented on the service’s progress: “We’ve had a great start and we’re delighted to have received such a positive response from consumers. We’re already the fastest growing TV service in the UK and now we can see that translating into viewing.”

Expanding presence on mobile devices is another priority. An iOS app is already available, and YouView plans to release an Android app in the coming weeks. The mobile apps are intended to complement the TV experience by allowing users to control the set-top box and manage recordings from their phones or tablets.

The combination of established broadcast partners, free-to-access content after a one-time hardware purchase, catch-up services and incoming internet channels positions YouView as a competitive option for viewers who want traditional TV with additional online features. As the platform rolls out new channels and mobile apps, viewers can expect access and control improvements over time.
