UK Broadband Showdown: Comparing the Leading Providers and Plans

Opensignal has conducted a comprehensive analysis of real-world fixed broadband performance across the United Kingdom. The study presents a national overview and dives into detailed findings for five major cities: Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, and Manchester.

National broadband landscape

The UK’s fixed broadband market is undergoing rapid change. Ofcom’s recent assessments indicate a substantial increase in full fibre (FTTP) coverage is expected, from around 15.4 million premises in May 2023 to an estimated 27 million by May 2026. This expansion is driven by policies and initiatives that make high-speed infrastructure more widely available.

Key drivers include Physical Infrastructure Agreements (PIAs), which allow internet service providers to use Openreach’s infrastructure, and the UK Government’s Project Gigabit, backed by a £5 billion investment to extend gigabit-capable broadband to rural and underserved areas. While these programmes accelerate deployment, providers must also manage rising costs and growing competition, which can complicate rollout plans.

Opensignal’s report highlights how differences in customer plans and speed tiers affect measured performance. The findings show how providers are navigating the transition from legacy technologies to faster, fibre-based services and how that transition shapes customers’ everyday experience.

Fibre-only providers lead performance

Fibre-focused providers lead the national performance rankings. Community Fibre consistently ranks at the top across key speed metrics, while Virgin Media — which operates both cable and FTTP services — also performs strongly at a national level.

In London, Community Fibre is the clear leader across all measured categories, delivering high average and peak download speeds. Outside the capital, the landscape shifts: Virgin Media often leads in cities such as Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, and Manchester, demonstrating strong performance in download speed and consistent quality metrics.

For Broadband Consistent Quality, Community Fibre and Gigaclear are statistically tied for first place nationally, while Hyperoptic joins them among the top providers for Broadband Video Experience, reflecting strong performance for streaming and video-related metrics.

Broadband experience in major UK cities

City-level results show distinct patterns. In London, Community Fibre outperforms rivals across the board, making it the top choice for many users in the capital. In other cities, Virgin Media frequently takes the lead for Broadband Download Speed and Broadband Consistent Quality, offering reliable high-speed connections for many urban customers.

Upload speeds present a more varied picture. Vodafone customers record the fastest average uploads in Belfast and Edinburgh, while BT users lead upload performance in Cardiff. These variations reflect differences in network investments and the technology mix available to customers in each city.

Opensignal’s report provides a useful snapshot of the evolving UK fixed broadband market, showing how different providers perform across regions and how network upgrades and market competition are shaping user experience.
