4G is widely available in many places and 5G is being trialed, yet numerous rural communities still struggle to get a reliable 3G signal. Hundreds of villages and hamlets remain underserved through little choice of their own. One mobile operator has launched an initiative to change that.
Vodafone has introduced a national program in the UK to target up to one hundred villages that currently have poor or no mobile coverage. The scheme aims to identify communities most in need and work with them to improve connectivity.
Local communities can apply to have Vodafone’s Open Sure Signal installed. Vodafone says this solution could bring 3G access to as many as ten thousand people who previously lacked service. For residents who rarely see the 4G icon on their phones, this program offers practical relief.
Open Sure Signal uses femtocell technology to boost mobile coverage. The system has already been deployed in 12 communities across the UK. It connects to a local broadband line and broadcasts a 3G signal to nearby areas that struggle with reception, including locations shadowed by hills or distant from masts.
One trial took place in the small village of East Garston. Adam Lyddiard, landlord of the Queen’s Arms pub there, recalled how people used to drive up a nearby hill just to make calls. “You’d often see one of your friends up there,” he said. “Other places you could sometimes get a signal included the back of the hall and standing on the picnic benches.”
Jeroen Hoencamp, Vodafone UK Chief Executive, described the program as an opportunity for communities to make a tangible difference to local life and help close the digital divide between rural and urban areas. “Bringing mobile coverage and mobile internet to rural areas gives communities a real boost — both economically and socially,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing the successful communities light up and start to experience the benefits mobile connectivity will bring to each and every community involved.”
As part of its broader investment plans, Vodafone is committing £1 billion this year to improve its network and services. That investment will also expand 4G coverage to more towns and cities, increasing the number of people with faster mobile data access.
If your village needs a coverage boost you can apply to Vodafone’s program through the operator’s network and coverage pages.
