Verizon’s Advanced Calling Arrives — iPhone 6 Now Supported

Earlier this month Verizon Wireless rolled out “Advanced Calling” across its nationwide network, though not all smartphones could use it immediately. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were initially excluded from access to this deceptively simple but meaningful feature.

This week Verizon flipped the switch, and owners of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus can now access the service.

Advanced Calling is Verizon’s consumer-facing name for VoLTE (Voice over LTE). It enables simultaneous voice and data on LTE networks, so users can browse the web, check email, or use apps while on a call without dropping to a slower network.

The ability to use data and voice concurrently is especially useful for professionals who need to look up information, follow directions, or share content during a conversation. Advanced Calling also supports High-Definition (HD) Voice, which transmits a wider range of audio frequencies for clearer, more natural-sounding calls.

Verizon describes the rollout as Advanced Calling 1.0, a first-generation suite built on VoLTE technology available on the carrier’s 4G LTE network: “With Advanced Calling 1.0, there is a clear difference. You will be able to enjoy natural-sounding High-Definition (HD) Voice and a Video Calling experience that’s as simple as making a traditional voice call.”

Video calling is improved as well. When Advanced Calling is active, your phone’s contact list will display a video camera icon next to contacts who are reachable for video calls, making it simple to initiate a face-to-face conversation. Voice calls placed over the service will also benefit from HD audio quality.

To enable Advanced Calling, customers must add the feature to their Verizon account through the carrier’s website. On supported devices, users should check LTE settings and ensure both Voice and Data options are enabled.

At launch, supported devices included the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, LG G2, and Samsung Galaxy S5.
