Telstra and Optus Advance 5G Rollout Plans Across Australia

Australian telecommunications company Telstra has opened a 5G Innovation Centre at its Southport Exchange on the Gold Coast, where it will test next-generation mobile technologies to support early commercial deployment of 5G services across the country.

The 5G Innovation Centre is designed to bring together technology vendors, developers, start-ups and Telstra’s enterprise customers to accelerate practical 5G solutions. In the months ahead, Telstra will run trials in and around the Gold Coast site. The location will also host a 3GPP meeting in September, where international experts will work on global 5G standards.

Robyn Denholm, Telstra’s Chief Operations Officer, said the centre aims to ensure Australia is among the first countries to adopt 5G. She noted that preparing for 5G is part of Telstra’s Networks for the Future initiative, supported by up to $3 billion in incremental investment to transform service delivery and bring new products to market. This funding underpins Telstra’s commitment to continue providing Australia’s largest and fastest mobile network.

Other Australian operators are moving in parallel. Optus has announced plans to roll out 5G technology by early 2019, including a fixed wireless product targeted at major metropolitan areas. That announcement follows a successful outdoor trial using 5G New Radio technology that achieved download speeds around 2 Gbps with a prototype device suitable for fixed wireless home and business services.

In its testing, Optus and Telstra have used both C-band and millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum. These bands are regarded globally as pioneer ranges for 5G because they enable the low latency and very high throughput expected from the technology. Notably, C-band sits in the same spectrum region as Optus’ 3.5 GHz allocation, which has been earmarked for 5G deployment.

Optus will also stage a 5G technology showcase during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The event will give visitors in the Broadbeach precinct a hands-on opportunity to experience 5G capabilities and services, demonstrating the potential real-world benefits of the next generation of mobile networks.

By combining industry partners, trial sites and public demonstrations, Australia’s early 5G initiatives aim to accelerate commercial readiness and build an ecosystem that supports enterprise use cases, consumer services and future innovation. These coordinated efforts by operators, standards bodies and the vendor community are intended to position Australia at the forefront of 5G deployment and ensure that businesses and consumers can quickly benefit from faster speeds, lower latency and new connectivity-driven applications.
