Sierra Wireless Buys Numerex for $107M to Expand Customer Base

Sierra Wireless has announced it will acquire Numerex, a provider of machine-to-machine communications, for $107 million (approximately £81.5 million). The acquisition strengthens Sierra Wireless’s customer base and expands its sales capabilities as it advances its presence in the Internet of Things (IoT) market.

According to Sierra Wireless, the deal supports the company’s global IoT strategy by adding an experienced sales team and established channel relationships. The acquisition is also intended to accelerate Sierra Wireless’s “device-to-cloud” approach, integrating connected hardware, connectivity management and cloud services into a more complete IoT offering.

“We believe that the combination of Sierra Wireless and Numerex results in a powerful business and technology platform that will enable us to drive a global leadership position in IoT services and solutions,” said Jason Cohenour, CEO of Sierra Wireless, during a call with analysts.

Earlier in the quarter, Sierra Wireless completed the acquisition of FlowThings, a move that received relatively little attention at the time. Cohenour noted that adding Numerex to Sierra Wireless’s portfolio will further advance the company’s targets: reaching more than $1 billion in annual revenue and deriving over 10% of revenue from recurring IoT services.

In the most recent quarter, Sierra Wireless reported revenue of $173.5 million, up 11.1% compared with the same period a year earlier. The company’s guidance for the third quarter projects revenue between $167 million and $175 million. Following the quarterly results, the company’s stock experienced some downward pressure, but analysts were generally not alarmed by the acquisition. Observers point out that, if integration goes as planned, the Numerex acquisition should strengthen Sierra Wireless’s position as a central player in the growing IoT market.

The transaction underscores an industry trend toward consolidation and expanded service offerings, as device manufacturers and connectivity providers seek to offer end-to-end solutions that simplify deployment and ongoing management for enterprise customers. By combining products, sales channels and cloud capabilities, Sierra Wireless aims to deliver a broader, more cohesive set of IoT services that can accelerate customer adoption and generate a larger share of recurring revenue.

With this acquisition, Sierra Wireless adds to its portfolio both technological assets and a team experienced in selling M2M and IoT solutions. The company expects these additions to improve its competitive position across verticals that rely on connected devices—including asset tracking, smart energy, healthcare monitoring and industrial automation—where integrated device-to-cloud solutions can provide clearer value and reduce total cost of ownership for customers.

Management has emphasized disciplined integration, focusing on leveraging Numerex’s existing contracts and relationships while aligning product roadmaps and sales efforts to maximize cross-selling opportunities. If executed effectively, the deal should enable Sierra Wireless to accelerate revenue growth, expand its recurring revenue base, and enhance its long-term leadership in the global IoT services and solutions market.
